Men’s Tennis Sweeps #HLMTEN Weekly Awards

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – For the second straight week the Cleveland State men's tennis team picked up weekly honors from the Horizon League, as Nico Mostardi was once again named the Singles Player of the Week, and Mostardi and Matthew Terry were named the Doubles Team of the Week.

Last weekend, the Vikings posted a perfect 3-0 record at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion, picking up wins over Duquesne (4-3), DePaul (6-1) and Oberlin (6-1), improving to 3-2 on the young season.

Mostardi once again played at No. 1 singles for the Vikings, going 3-0 on the weekend to stay perfect on the spring season. All three of Mostardi's singles wins came as straight set victories, as he improved to 16-4 overall this season and 4-0 this spring.

"Nico is playing some good tennis right now, and controlling what he can control on and off the court," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "This is a great individual award for Nico, but we can definitely feel the team momentum building thanks to the great energy and enthusiasm that he brings to every match."

In doubles action, Mostardi and Terry picked up wins at No. 2 doubles against Duquesne and DePaul, helping the Vikings pick up the early point in both matches. The duo notched a 6-2 victory in Friday's win over Duquesne, and then battled for a 7-5 victory against DePaul on Saturday. This spring, the tandem owns a 2-0 record, while they stand at 6-0 on the year.

"Nico and Matt have been working really hard to gel as a team, and this wasn't a team that we originally had playing together, but over the first few weeks of the spring season they have been playing really well together. They still have plenty of room to grow as a doubles team, and both of their work ethics will allow that to happen over the coming weeks," Etzkin said.

The Vikings will continue the spring season with a doubleheader on Saturday, February 3, hosting Northern Illinois at 10:00 a.m. and Case Western Reserve at 6:00 p.m. in the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion.
