Mostardi Named #HLMTEN Singles Player Of The Week

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – After kicking off the 2018 Spring Season last weekend, Cleveland State men's tennis sophomore Nico Mostardi has been named the Horizon League Singles Player of the Week.

Last weekend, the Vikings opened the spring season against back-to-back Power Five teams, traveling to No. 2 Ohio State and Notre Dame.

"This is a great honor for Nico, he is maturing in front of our eyes and trusting his game more and more and turning into a great leader for us," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "His Notre Dame opponent is somebody that he defeated in the fall, and to be able to back that up with another win is a very tough feat."

Playing at the top of the singles lineup, Mostardi went 1-0 on the weekend, picking up a victory against Notre Dame's Matt Gamble in a 7-6 (2), 6-4 decision, while his No. 1 singles match against Ohio State was suspended after the Buckeyes clinched the match.

For the season, Mostardi has a team-best 13-4 singles record, with the 13 wins marking a season-high among Horizon League players.

Through his first two seasons, Mostardi has spent his entire dual match career playing at the top of the singles lineup, and enters the weekend with 31 career singles wins.

Mostardi and the Vikings will play at home in the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion for the first time this weekend, hosting Duquesne on Friday, January 26 and DePaul and Oberlin on Sunday, January 28.
