Cleveland State Captures Singles & Doubles Title At Viking Invitational

UPDATED SINGLES DRAW | UPDATED DOUBLES DRAW

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State men's tennis team wrapped up its fall season at the Viking Invitational this weekend, with Nico Mostardi taking home the singles title and Mostardi and Matthew Terry winning the doubles title.

"We got off to a great start today with the main draw doubles win from Nico and Matt, and I think that definitely gave Nico some energy heading into his singles matches," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "Although this was the first time that Matt and Nico had played together, I thought they teamed up to play a good match and found a way to win late in their match. It was great to have the top two seeds in the main singles draw play each other in the finals, and it led to a good match on both sides. I thought Nico did a good job of playing against some adversity today and picked up a quality win against somebody that we will definitely see during the spring season."

Mostardi was able to defend his Viking Invitational singles title, going 5-0 in the main singles draw to capture the crown. On the final day, Mostardi notched a 6-2, 7-6 (3) victory against Northern Illinois in the semifinals, before posting a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Youngstown State in the championship match.

After picking up five wins on the weekend, Mostardi now has a 12-4 record this fall.

Mostardi and Matthew Terry captured the doubles title at the Viking Invitational, as they went 4-0 during their first tournament playing as a tandem. In the championship match, they picked up a 7-6 (4) victory over a Youngstown State duo, marking their second straight tiebreak victory.

Cleveland State also captured a backdraw doubles title on Sunday, with Mirko Radosevic and Benjamin Slade picking up a 7-6 (4) victory over Northern Illinois.

"This was a great finish to a successful fall season for us, and we will now train hard in the off season to have a competitive spring season," Etzkin said.

The Viking Invitational was the final fall tournament for Cleveland State, with the spring slate beginning on January 20 at Ohio State.
