Men's Tennis Captures Two Consolation Titles At Louisville Invitational

COMPLETE DOUBLES & SINGLES DRAWS

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Cleveland State men's tennis team had a successful final day at the Louisville Invitational, bringing home a pair of consolation titles and five wins on the day.

"We definitely finished strong today, it was another step forward this weekend and another solid tournament for us this fall," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "I'm proud of how the guys competed no matter what they were playing for, they have been doing a really good job of supporting each other and forming a brotherhood during the first few weeks of the fall season."

For the second straight tournament this fall, freshman Matthew Terry was able to capture a title, as he brought home the A Flight Backdraw title. In Sunday's championship match, Terry picked up a 6-4, 0-6, 1-0 (5) victory over Butler's Mason Dragos, and now stands at 7-1 in singles play this fall.

Cleveland State's other consolation title came in the C Doubles flight, as Benjamin Slade and Jack Santilli picked up a pair of wins on Sunday to capture the crown. In the semifinals, Slade and Santilli picked up a forfeit win over Xavier, and then posted a 6-3 victory over a Tennessee Chattanooga team in the consolation finals.

"A couple individuals to highlight would definitely be Matthew and Jack – Matthew was able to pick up a backdraw championship this weekend, and had a really strong match in his final outing this weekend – coming back strong to play a clean tiebreaker to pick up the win in his championship match. Jack has been playing some good doubles this fall, and has been able to pick up two different backdraw titles with two different partners – which really shows his ability to play with anyone on the roster," Etzkin said.

The Vikings were also able to pick up a pair of bonus match victories, with William Malm earning a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Butler's Addison Cazier and the doubles team of Nico Mostardi and Luke Phillips posting a 6-3 win over a Butler tandem.

Next up for the Vikings will be the ITA Midwest Regional next week, with action beginning on Thursday, October 19. This year's ITA Midwest Regional will be hosted in Ann Arbor, Mich.
