UPDATED DOUBLES & SINGLES DRAWS
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Cleveland State men's tennis team continued play at the Louisville Invitational Saturday, with the freshmen duo of Matthew Terry and Luke Phillips leading the way for the Vikings.
"Today we were able to battle for some victories in both the main and consolation draws, really focusing on our games and not letting any defeats get us down," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "I have been really impressed with how the freshmen have handled themselves throughout the first two weekends of fall play – Luke has been improving by leaps and bounds each week, and Matthew continues to put together strong matches that have allowed him to reach championship rounds during both tournaments."
After dropping his first collegiate singles match yesterday, freshman Matthew Terry continued his trek through the consolation bracket today, as he picked up two wins in the A Consolation draw to earn a spot in the championship match. In the quarterfinals of the consolation draw Terry picked up a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Spencer Lang of Butler, and then posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Toledo's Vince Anzalone in the semifinals.
Terry will now face Mason Dragos of Butler in the A Consolation Championship match tomorrow.
Luke Phillips, who was competing in the B Flight, was able to pick up another win in the quarterfinals of his draw before dropping his semifinal contest today. Phillips earned a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Wright State's Param Pun in the main draw quarters, marking his third straight singles win of the weekend.
Also picking up wins on the day were Jack Santilli in the C Consolation draw and Benjamin Slade and Santilli in the C Doubles Consolation draw.
Tomorrow (Sunday, October 15) will be the final day of the Louisville Invitational, with the final rounds of singles and doubles action being played.
