WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Cleveland State men's tennis team had a successful first day at the Purdue Fall Invitational Friday, splitting their singles matches and going 4-2 in doubles action.

The freshmen duo of Matthew Terry and Luke Phillips led the way for the Vikings in singles action on the opening day of the Purdue Fall Invitational, Terry picking up a win in the A Flight and Phillips earning a first round victory in the B Flight. Cleveland State's third singles win on the day came from sophomore Jack Santilli, who earned a victory by retirement in the D Flight.

Terry picked up a 6-1, 6-4 victory against Butler's Spencer Lang in his first collegiate match, while Phillips battled for a 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3 win against Luis Heredia of Marquette in the first match of his Cleveland State career.

All three will now play in a second round match tomorrow morning (Saturday, September 16).

In doubles action, Nico Mostardi and Phillips won both of their matches in the A Flight Friday, earning a spot in the semifinals tomorrow morning. In the first round, the duo picked up a 7-5 win over an IUPUI team and then posted a 7-6 (6) victory over Bucknell in the second round.

Benjamin Slade and William Malm, who were also playing in the A Flight, dropped their opening round match but rebounded with a 6-4 victory in the backdraw against a tandem from Ball State.

Cleveland State's final doubles team of Matthew Terry and Jack Santilli also split their matches Friday, picking up a 6-1 victory over Olivet Nazarene in the first round before falling to a team from Butler, 6-3 in the second round.

Play at the Purdue Fall Invitational will continue tomorrow, with two rounds of singles action and two rounds of doubles play.
