Slade & Malm Pick Up Singles Wins On First Day Of Wake Forest Invitational

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Cleveland State men's tennis team began play at their final fall tournament Friday, with Benjamin Slade and William Malm both picking up singles wins on the first day of the Wake Forest Invitational.

"We had a great first day of tennis at the Wake Forest Invitational, led by Ben, who looked really good on the courts today. He has played some good tennis – even in defeat – at our last tournament, so it's great to see him stick with his game and pick up some good wins," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "William was also able to pick up a win today, and it's great to see him continue his strong play on the court throughout the fall season. We are looking forward to building on today when we hit the courts tomorrow."

Benjamin Slade led the Vikings picking up a pair of singles wins on Friday, as he advanced to the semifinals of the C2 Singles bracket. Slade's first round victory came as a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Radford's Sam Taylor, with his second round win coming against Fernando Clemente of Campbell (6-4, 6-2). Slade will compete in the semifinals tomorrow, with the championship match on Sunday.

William Malm also picked up a singles win for the Vikings, earning a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory against UNCA's Reid Dillon. After earning a bye in the first round, Malm's victory on Friday put him in the semifinals of the D1 Singles bracket which will also be played tomorrow.

Play will continue at the Wake Forest Invitational tomorrow (Saturday, November 12).
