Swimmers Break School Records At Miami Invitational

Oxford, Ohio - The Cleveland State men's and women's swim teams set a pair of school records and 11 Horizon League season-best times on the second day of the Miami Invitational on Saturday (Dec. 4). The men's team currently sits in fourth place with 763.5 points, while the women have 450 points for seventh.

For the men, junior Pieter Pelser took first in the 100 backstroke with a season-best 49.88. Freshman Dave Duecker claimed the Horizon League season-best mark in the 400 IM with an eighth-place time of 4:11.27, while senior Luke Wilkens improved on his league-best time in the 100 fly with a career-best 49.33. Freshman Bjorn Schantz added a season-best 1:41.60 in the 200 freestyle, and senior Gabriel Linton added a best 59.10 in the 100 breast.

Wilkens, Daniel Thomasson, Schantz and Duecker posted a league-best 6:49.92 in the 800 free relay, and the 200 medley relay team of Pelser, Linton, Wilkens and Johan Norling swam to a season-best 1:33.71 for fourth place.

On the women's side, sophomore Marianne Lionell set a school-record in the 100 breaststroke with a league-season best time of 1:04.95. The record comes a day after the Sodertalje, Sweden native tied her own school mark in the 50 free (23.86). Additionally, the 800 freestyle relay team of Kirsty McKechnie, Tina Abbott, Lionell and Samantha Jones swam to a school-record and league season-best 7:45.67.

Jones also topped her season-best time twice in the 100 fly, making the trip in 58.61 in the prelims and 58.98 in the finals, and recorded a league-best 57.60 in winning the 100 back.

The Miami women's team leads the field with 1,111 points, while the men's team from Kenyon holds the top spot with 1,272.5 points. The final day of the tournament begins Sunday (Dec. 5) with prelims at 9:00 a.m. and the finals at 4:00 p.m.
