Ypsilanti, Mich. - Cleveland State swimmers scored numerous top times against Eastern Michigan on Friday, but the experienced Eagles teams were too much in the final standings. Sophomore Marianne Lionell tallied a pair of wins in the meet, and junior Kirsty McKechnie recorded an additional win for the women, while Bjorn Schantz posted a top mark for the men's squad.

Lionell notched a close win in the 50 free with a time of 24.55 and ousted her nearest competitor in the 200 breast by nearly five seconds (2:24.96 to 2.29.40). McKechnie recorded a season-best time of 10:38.92 in the 1,000 free for the Vikings first win of the meet and added a second-place finish in the 500 free (5:15.55).

Freshman Deanna Raedel posted team-best times in both the 100 and 200 freestyles, swimming to second-place showings in 54.42 and 1:58.60, respectively. Senior Samantha Jones scored a pair of second-place showings, posting a season-best time of 2:11.71 in the 200 IM and a time of 2:09.11 in the 200 back.

The 200 medley relay team of Jones, Lionell, Marlene Przykling and Raedel also recorded a season-best 1:51.07, but the Eagles came out on top in the end with a 169-66 win.

"I'm proud of the way we swam here tonight," head coach Mike Lehto said. "Everyone came out strong. We expected a tough meet coming in, but we swam some of our best times on the year."

Schantz continued his stellar season, swimming to the men's team's only win in the 500 free (4:34.60) and added a second-place showing in the 1,000 free (9:32.92). Senior Luke Wilkens recorded a pair of team-bests on the season, swimming the 200 free in 1:42.48 and the 200 fly in 1:51.21.

Additionally, junior Daniel Thomasson topped his season-best in the 100 free in 47.48 and Pieter Pelser swam a season-best 1:52.89 in the 200 back. The Vikings would come up short on points, however, falling to the Eagles 179-64.

"Eastern Michigan did what I expected them to do," head coach Wally Morton said. "They are a tough veteran team. They know how we beat them last season and they came ready for us. But I can't say enough about how we performed. We are young and developing, but we had some very good swims here tonight."

The Vikings return home to Busbey Natatorium on Monday (Nov. 15) for the "City College Meet" with Baldwin-Wallace, Gannon and John Carroll beginning with diving at 2:00 p.m. and following up with swimming at 3:30 p.m.
