San Juan, Puerto Rico - The men's swimming and diving team opened 2010 at the San Juan Sprint Invitational in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In the meet that only included 50 meter events, the Vikings came out with two individual victories and placed a swimmer in every race.

"Our training has been going very well so far this year and I am looking forward to the rest of the 2009-10 season," head coach Wally Morton said. "We had a great first meet here and hopefully everyone will be ready to go and healthy for the next meet."

Stephen Grove recorded the first victory for the Vikings in the 50 meter fly, finishing in 27.70, just nine-tenths of a second before second place finisher Todd Winchell.

In the second race of the meet, the 50 meter backstroke, Pierre De Waal touched first in 31.19. Winchell posted another second place finish, ending the race in 31.50.

Berry Thompson and Deni Gasparin both placed for CSU in the 50 meter breaststroke, Thompson recording a time of 34.07, good enough for a second place finish and Gasparin with a third place finish in 34.56.

The Vikings also placed second and third in the 50 meter free with Mike Marsico touching second in 26.11 and Justin Hill finishing third in 26.30.

The Vikings ended the meet with 24 points and a 12 point victory over the Syracuse Orange.

CSU hosts Duquesne and Xavier on Saturday, January 16 in the first meet of the new-year at Busbey Natatorium. The meet is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
