CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming & diving teams return to action this weekend after breaking from competition around the Thanksgiving holiday.
CSU heads to Ashland for a dual meet this Saturday, Dec. 8, at 1:00 p.m. in what will be the programs' final action of the 2018 calendar year. The meet lineup is listed below.
The CSU men are coming off their fifth consecutive Magnus Cup title on the weekend before Thanksgiving. The Vikings tallied a school record 1,871.5 points at the meet while their 543.5-point margin of victory was a meet record.
Junior Dominic Poletta and sophomore Dominik Niedzialek both won two individual events at the Magnus Cup while sophomore Matt Akers swept the diving disciplines. Poletta won the 50 freestyle and 50 butterfly while Niedzialek swept the backstroke events and owns the top time this season in the Horizon League in the 200 back (1:46.38). Freshman Jack Krusinski had a trio of top-three finishes and six top-eight individual finishes at the Magnus Cup, competing in all three breaststroke events, both IM's and the 50 butterfly.
The CSU women finished in fifth place among a meet-record 16 women's teams at the Magnus Cup. The Vikings tallied 649.5 points as they finished in the upper third of the teams attending for the third straight season.
Sophomore Lexie Kostelnik broke the school record in the 1650 freestyle as her 17:03.00 is the fastest time in the League this season. Senior Molly McNamara ended the meet in style as she won the final women's individual event—the 200 butterfly. She claimed the win in 2:00.87, the fastest time in the League this year. Sophomore Alana Cartwright had runner-up finishes in the 50 backstroke and 100 IM and also took fourth in the 100 breaststroke. Freshman Agnes Bahr had a breakout performance, posting a trio of top-10 individual finishes.
It will be the second straight season CSU and Ashland have faced one another in dual action after not doing so for the decade prior to that. CSU won 14 of 16 events in both genders last year to claim a 182-90 win on the women's side and a 176-105 victory on the men's side.
Both Ashland programs are 0-2 this season. The Eagles competed at the three-day Total Sports Performance Sports Camps Invitational last weekend hosted by Kenyon. It will be the second time the squads have seen each other this season as Ashland came to CSU's Viking Relay Challenge to open the season.
Cleveland State will return to action on the second weekend of January for a Horizon League tri-dual hosted by IUPUI.
