OXFORD, Ohio - The Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming & diving teams came up short in their dual road openers Saturday afternoon at Miami (Ohio) inside the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center.

Miami won 208-92 on the men's side and was victorious 243-51 on the women's side.

Sophomore Matt Akers had a second straight strong effort on the diving board, especially in the 1-meter event. He claimed victory in the 1-meter with a NCAA qualifying score of 312.97 points, his second consecutive effort of at least 310 points. Senior Curtis Roden was third in the 1-meter with 288.15 points.

Akers and Roden finished fourth and fifth in the 3-meter event with 299.55 points and 292.13 points, respectively.

Freshman Jack Krusinski won the men's 200 breaststroke in 2:05.39 and took second place in the 100 breaststroke in 57.42 seconds. He was also CSU's top finisher in the 200 IM, taking third in 1:56.88. Sophomore Timothy Kubacki was not far behind in fourth, touching the wall in 1:57.11.

Kubacki was among the top three in both backstroke events. He was second in the 100 back in 51.16 seconds. Kubacki took third in the 200 backstroke in 1:51.76 while classmate Dominik Niedzialek was one spot higher, finishing as the runner-up in 1:49.82.

Niedzialek was second in the 1650 freestyle, stopping the clock in 16:07.52.

Junior Matthew Martin was CSU's top finisher in both butterfly events. He was third in the 200 (1:51.96) and fourth in the 100 (50.98).

Junior Dominic Poletta and sophomore Ryan Sedlak were second and third in the 50 free in 20.91 and 21.22 seconds, respectively. Junior Jack MacDonald finished in second place in the 100 free in 46.82 seconds.

Senior Jason van der Touw (1:43.22) and junior Erwan Mahoudo (4:45.50) each finished third, the former in the 200 free and the latter in the 500 free.

The CSU men took second in the 400 medley relay in 3:22.52 as Niedzialek, Krusinski, Martin and junior DJ Arslanian comprised the quartet. CSU's 400 free relay was the runner-up in 3:07.10 and consisted of MacDonald, van der Touw, Arslanian and senior Sean Mulvin.

Senior Molly McNamara returned to action for the Viking women after missing the past couple of meets and took runner-up honors in both butterfly events. She finished the 100 in 56.60 seconds and stopped the clock in the 200 in 2:05.45.

Sophomore Alana Cartwright was second in the 100 backstroke in 58.20 seconds.

Sophomores Libby Smith and Irena Weclawiak were the top Vikings in two individual events.

Smith was the top Viking in both breaststroke events, finishing the 100 in 1:07.14 and the 200 in 2:25.22. Weclawiak was the top Viking in a pair of freestyle events, finishing the 200 in 1:55.01 and the 500 in 5:11.98.

Sophomore Agnes Bahr, senior Michaela Bargardi and junior Gabriella Marinelli each posted a fourth-place finish.

Bahr's came in the 200 IM (2:12.41), Bargardi's came in the 200 backstroke (2:09.87) and Marinelli's came in the 100 freestyle (53.62).

Junior Madisyn Jaszcz was CSU's top finisher in the 50 free (25.53).

Cleveland State will take next weekend off from competition before hosting the annual Magnus Cup on the third weekend of November.
