Viking Duo Compete at Polish National Championships

CLEVELAND, Ohio – A pair of Cleveland State University swimmers competed in the Polish National Championships this past weekend.

Dominik Niedzialek and Irena Weclawiak, both rising sophomores, took part in their country's most prestigious event.

Niedzialek posted a trio of top-15 finishes, including one top-10 performance. He opened the event by placing seventh in the 200-meter backstroke in 2:04.37. He had posted the third-fastest time in the prelims, a personal best of 2:03.54. Niedzialek also took 13th in the 100-meter backstroke (57.22) and 14th in the 50-meter back (26.92), setting personal bests in both of those events. He also contested the 100 freestyle and finished in 54.19 seconds.

Weclawiak competed in the 50, 100 and 200-meter freestyle over the four-day meet. Her best showing came in the 200, as she took 37th place among more than 100 competitors, stopping the clock in 2:11.85. She was also among the top half of the field in the 50 (28.06 seconds) and the 100 (1:00.76).

Both Niedzialek and Weclawiak helped the Cleveland State men's and women's programs post their highest point totals since 2013 at the most recent HL Championships. The men took second with 665.5 points and trailed the top spot by only 66 points. The Viking women improved two positions from the year prior, taking third with 586 points, and were only seven points out of second place.
