CSU Looks to Maintain Momentum at Defending Champs

CLEVELAND, Ohio – After having a highly successful weekend in its first action of the 2018 calendar year, the Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming & diving teams will look to keep their momentum going as they hit the road for a challenging matchup this weekend.

CSU heads to Oakland Saturday, Jan. 27, with action slated to get underway at 1:00 p.m. Live results will be available by clicking here. This will be the final dual of the season for the men's team while the women's program will have one weekend of dual action remaining.

The Viking men began 2018 by posting a 5-0 mark against a trio of League foes (IUPUI, UIC and Wright State) across two meets while the women's program finished with a 4-1 record in the same situation. Both CSU programs now own dual wins over four League opponents this season.

Junior Jason van der Touw was honored by the League office for the second time this season after CSU's last action. He racked up five first-place finishes and three second-place efforts across four different individual events and four relay swims. Sophomore D.J. Arslanian joined his teammate in providing five firsts and a trio of second-place efforts across the two days.

Junior Molly McNamara won weekly honors from the League for a League-high fourth time this season after CSU's last meet. She won four different individual events, including contesting the 400 IM for the first time this season, and also swam on a winning relay. Sophomore Chuchu Yang won three backstroke events over the two days while freshman Alana Cartwright won the lone backstroke race that Yang did not. Senior Jamie VanDewerker also won individual events in both meets for the Vikings.

Despite Oakland joining the Horizon League in 2013, this will be the 10th consecutive season in which both the men's and women's programs have faced off against the Golden Grizzlies. Oakland swept last season's dual meetings in Cleveland, claiming a 170.5-129.5 win on the men's side and a 185-107 triumph on the women's side.

Oakland is the reigning League champion on both the men's and women's sides. The Golden Grizzlies are 3-3 on the men's side and 6-3 on the women's side in dual action. Two of the three losses for both teams came to Big Ten foes. Both programs own wins over League foes IUPUI and UIC while the women's side also took down Youngstown State. Both programs fell at Michigan State last weekend in their first competitive action since the first weekend of December, with the men's team falling by just 27 points. This is Oakland's final action before the Horizon League Championships.

The CSU women will remain on the road next weekend with a pair of duals on back-to-back days.
