Van der Touw Recognized With Weekly Honor

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Junior Jason van der Touw of the Cleveland State University men's swimming & diving team was named Horizon League Men's Swimmer of the Week as announced by the League office Tuesday afternoon.

It is the second time this season that van der Touw has earned this honor from the League while he has also claimed two awards from CollegeSwimming this season.

Van der Touw played a large role in helping the Vikings to a perfect 5-0 dual mark this past weekend, as CSU defeated a trio of Horizon League opponents. Over the course of two meets, van der Touw racked up five first-place finishes and three runner-up efforts across four different individual events and four relay swims.

In a tri-dual Friday with IUPUI and UIC, van der Touw began by swimming the anchor leg on the winning 400 medley relay, with his 45.47 split representing the best of the 10 relay squads in the group. He then won the 200 freestyle by over a second (1:40.70) before finishing second in the 500 free (4:39.06). He ended Friday's meet by anchoring his 200 free relay team to a victory with his 20.86 split representing the fastest of any final leg.

With the addition of Wright State to the three teams that competed Friday, van der Touw was a part of two more wins in Saturday's quad dual. Van der Touw won the 100 backstroke (51.22) and also finished a close second in the 100 free (46.06), finishing only .17 seconds off the pace. He also posted the fastest lead split in the 200 medley relay (23.81) and helped CSU win the 400 free relay by posting the fastest split (45.31) of all 52 swimmers in the event.

Van der Touw sits among the top six times in the League this season in four events—the 100, 200 and 500 freestyle and the 100 backstroke.

The CSU men have won three weekly swimming honorees from the League this season and six when combining swimming & diving awards, both of which represent League highs.

Cleveland State will return to action Saturday, Jan. 27, when it travels to Oakland in dual action.
