Cleveland State to Face League Foes This Weekend

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming and diving teams will square off directly against Horizon League opponents for the first time during the upcoming holiday weekend.

Both programs will travel to UIC, which is slated to host the 2017 Horizon League Championships, Saturday, Jan. 14. The Vikings and Flames will open their meet at Noon (EST).

The women's team will then have a quick turnaround as it returns home to host League foe Youngstown State Monday, Jan. 16, at 5:00 p.m. Live results for the meet against YSU will be available on the Meet Mobile app ($). Fans wishing to follow from afar can also keep tabs on the meet on the teams' Twitter account (@VikingSwimming or Twitter.com/VikingSwimming).

Both programs competed just over one week ago in the Copa Coqui meet in Puerto Rico. The CSU women tied for second while the men finished third as five long-course meter events were contested by each gender. Both Molly McNamara and Philipp Sikatzki won the 100-meter butterfly discipline.

Partially due to their scheduled December meet against Canisius getting canceled, CSU has not competed in a traditional short-course yards event since both teams hosted the Magnus Cup on the weekend before Thanksgiving. The Vikings have not contested a dual meet since Nov. 11.

The CSU men have won dual meets against UIC in eight of the past 10 seasons, including claiming a 172-128 victory in mid-January last season. The Viking women have won matchups against both the Flames and Youngstown State in five of the past seven seasons.

The Cleveland State men won the aforementioned Magnus Cup, as the Vikings posted 1,608.5 points to win the title for the third consecutive season. Buoyed by their strong performance at that event, the Viking men enter the weekend with 18 entries among the top five times in the Horizon League this season.

The Cleveland State women posted their best finish (4th) and highest point total (800.5) at the Magnus Cup since the 2013 event. That feat is even more notable since the meet grew considerably this year and featured a record number of women's teams (14). The Viking women enter the weekend with 12 entries among the top 10 times in the League this season.

The UIC men are 6-2 in dual action and own a 3-1 mark against Horizon League foes. The UIC women are 5-3 overall and sport a 2-2 dual mark against League opponents. Neither team has competed since Nov. 18-20 at the TYR Invitational. This will be the final dual meet for the Flames before the League championships.

Youngstown State sports a 2-3 dual mark on the season. However, the Penguins are hosting dual meets Friday (vs. Saint Francis (Pa.)) and Saturday (vs. IUPUI) before heading to Cleveland Monday. YSU lost its lone Horizon League dual to this point, as it fell to defending champion Oakland by just 31 points.

Cleveland State will continue action when it travels to a League foe for the second straight weekend as it heads to Wright State Jan. 21.
