2014 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships Begin Tomorrow

2014 HORIZON LEAGUE SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

February 26- March 1, 2014

SETTING THE SCENE:  The Cleveland State men's and women's swimming and diving teams will be competing in the 2014 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships beginning on Wednesday-Saturday (Feb. 26- Mar. 1) at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.  Diving on Wednesday will be the first event beginning at 1:30 p.m. with swimming and diving finals beginning at 5:30 p.m.

REVIEWING THE YEAR:  The men's swimming and diving team finished the season at 10-6 overall and 4-1 in the conference.  The women ended the season matching the men's overall record at 10-6 and went 4-2 in the conference.

The Vikings had great seasons out of Alex Lewis, Al Shillito, Justin Kermack, Adam Ingledew, Nathan Grant, Patrick Walsh, Danny Roberts, and Stephen Schillero.  On the women's side Rowan Elbadry, Alex Johansson, Christine Kopacko, Jodi Turk, Sammie Sposet, Hayley Smith, and Madisen Tretter all had nice showings in the pool.

2014 HORIZON LEAGUE SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS:

  • The men head into the HL Championships as the defending 2013 HL Swimming and Diving Champions and have won two conference titles in the program's history.
  • The women will be trying for their first title in program history.

SHILLITO, LEWIS, INGLEDEW, GRANT, AND KERMACK FINISH FIRST IN LAST YEAR'S CHAMPIONSHIPS:

  • Senior Al Shillito finished first in the 100 back (49.39) and in the 200 back (1:46.35).  Senior Justin Kermack took first in the 200 fly with a wall touch of 1:47.51.
  • Senior Alex Lewis finished first in the 100 fly (48.38).  Junior Nathan Grant finished atop in the 200 breast (2:00.34).

U.S. WINTER NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS:

  • Eight talented CSU swimmers (Adam Ingledew, Alex Lewis, Alex Johansson, Al Shillito, Madisen Tretter, Justin Kermack, Nathan Grant, and Gage Alleman) had the opportunity to swim against top talent in Knoxville, Tennessee from Dec. 5 - Dec. 7.

LEWIS MAKES HISTORY AT U.S. WINTER NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS:

  • At U.S. Nationals, Lewis set back-to-back school records in the 4x50 Free Relay and in the 100 butterfly.  His time in the 50 free was an incredible 19.99 as the lead off swimmerand in the 100 fly he had an impressive wall touch of 48.11.
