Week #7

THE OPENING KICK:
• Cleveland State will use its Horizon League bye week to face a pair of Power Five teams on the road.
• CSU is 14-12-1 all-time against the Buckeyes with the series dating to 1967. The teams have met four times in the past decade, most recently in 2015.
Antonio Burgoa and Brent Nanchoff came off the bench as freshman in the last meeting against Ohio State.
• The Vikings are 7-6-4 vs. Pittsburgh all-time.
• CSU has won the past four meetings with the Panthers, all by shutout, and is unbeaten in the past six overall.
• The Vikings have won the past three against Pittsburgh by 1-0 scorelines, with Noah Pio providing the tally in the last meeting in 2016.

LAST TIME OUT:
Vlad Jandric's natural hat trick propelled Cleveland State past visiting UIC, 3-1, last weekend.
• Freshman Tommy Paltani made his first-career start in the win over UIC.
• CSU and Duquesne were tied, 0-0, at the half Tuesday but poor weather forced play to cease for the day. As a result, the match is declared 'no contest'.

FREE KICKS:
• Cleveland State was tabbed fifth in the Horizon League preseason poll.
• While it took the fifth seed in 2017, CSU has been seeded fourth or better in the Horizon League Tournament in eight of the past 10 seasons, the highest figure in the League in this span.
Vlad Jandric and Noah Pio were both selected All-Horizon League Second Team in 2017. Thomas M'Barek was named to the All-Freshman Team.
• Jandric's hat trick was the first by a Viking since Admir Suljevic achieved the feat during the 2013 campaign.
Noah Pio has a point in 10 of the past 20 matches, scoring in five of them. Pio was among the top 10 in points, goals and assists in HL play in 2017.
• Cleveland State's win over UIC ended a 12-match unbeaten run by the Flames against Horizon League opposition.
• This is the second straight season in which Cleveland State has played back-to-back matches on the road against Power Five sides (2017 - at Michigan, at Michigan State).
• Cleveland State has outshot its opponent in seven of its first eight matches, including all four Horizon League fixtures.
• The Vikings are the only team to outshoot their opponent in every Horizon League match of the season.
Noah Pio has scored or assisted on nine of CSU's last 13 goals in Horizon League matches.
• Among the 40 starts made by Vikings on defense or in goal this season: 19 starts have been made by true freshman or redshirt freshman, 20 starts have been made by sophomores with one start being made by a senior.
• Seven CSU rookies have started at least once with three freshmen owning five starts (Alex Gyerman, Ryan Kolonick, Jannis Schmidt).
• The Vikings got a result at Milwaukee Sept. 15 despite trailing in the match. This is the 13th consecutive season in which CSU has come from behind to earn a result at least once and the eighth straight season it has achieved the feat on the road. The Vikings have now pulled off the achievement in a road League match four times in the past five seasons.
Tommy Paltani became the 20th Viking to start a match in 2018 when he started vs. UIC. Paltani had only played 94 minutes all season before his start.

UP NEXT:
• Cleveland State returns home and resumes Horizon League action by hosting IUPUI Saturday, Oct. 13.
