Week #10

THE OPENING KICK:
 • Cleveland State has a pair of matches this week, one road and one home.
• CSU plays its road and non-conference finale at Cincinnati Tuesday.
• CSU is 7-8-1 all-time against the Bearcats with this being the sixth straight season the programs have met. CSU won, 3-1, in 2015 with help from a Gianluca DiFranco strike but dropped a 2-0 decision on the road last season.
• The Vikings then host Wright State Saturday, Oct. 28, at 7:00 p.m.
• CSU is 18-16-1 all-time against the Raiders, with the teams having met every season since 1989. The only tie in the series came in 1993.
• The Raiders have won back to back in the series after losing eight of the previous nine. Alec Nagucki scored twice in CSU's last win in 2014.

LAST WEEK:
 • CSU fell at defending HL tournament champion UIC, 1-0, in double overtime when the Flames were given a penalty kick in the final minute.

FREE KICKS:
 • Cleveland State will clinch a HL Tournament berth this weekend with a win AND an Oakland loss or tie or a win AND a Milwaukee loss. If CSU ties Wright State, it will control its own destiny in the final week of the season.
• Kirk Harwat is in his first season as head coach for CSU after serving as an assistant for the program for the past five seasons.
• Senior midfielder Alec Nagucki, an All-Horizon League First Team honoree last season, has played in every match--all 69--since he arrived on campus.
• CSU has been seeded fourth or better in the Horizon League Tournament in eight of the past nine seasons, the only team that can make this claim.
• CSU lost two central defenders from last year that combined to play in 108 matches, with Sergio Manesio twice earning HL Defensive Player of the Year. CSU has started two newcomers at central defense in 10 of 14 matches.
• Noah Pio has a point in four of the past seven matches and has scored in three of them. Pio is second in the League in shots in League matches with 25.
• Six CSU players have posted their first point as a Viking in 2017, with three--Bielanski, Conde and Jandric--scoring for the first time.
• Twenty five of Cleveland State's last 33 goals have come in the second half. In fact, 11 of those goals have taken place in the 77th minute or later.
• Six of Cleveland State's 10 newcomers have started a match this season.
• The Vikings allowed the fewest goals in the Horizon League last season, conceding 16 goals in 17 matches.
• Six of CSU's eight non-League opponents are in the top 80 in the RPI. Five of the eight are among the top 55, including three in the top 20.
• Four Vikings have played in all 14 matches--sophomore Thomas Bielanski, seniors Hesham Hammouda and Alec Nagucki and junior Noah Pio.
• CSU has allowed six goals from the run of play in its last 11 matches.
• Cleveland State has allowed six goals in seven HL matches, the second lowest total. The Vikings are also second in corner kicks in HL matches (39).
• Vlad Jandric & Noah Pio have scored CSU's last six goals in HL play.
• CSU is the only Horizon League team not to attempt a penalty this season. Eight of the other nine have made multiple penalty kicks in 2017.
• CSU is 6-1-1 in its last eight home games and has allowed five goals.

UP NEXT:
 • CSU will close the season by hosting Detroit Mercy Friday, Nov. 3.
