ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Cleveland State University men's soccer team played even with the University of Michigan over the opening 45 minutes, but the hosts found another gear in the second half to claim a 3-1 win Friday evening at U-M Soccer Stadium.

Sophomore Thomas Bielanski pocketed his first collegiate goal with a header in the 70th minute. Redshirt junior Brent Nanchoff posted an assist, his second in the first three matches.

Michigan had a slim, 5-4, advantage in shots on goal while each team was whistled for 12 fouls.

Scoring chances were few and far between in the early going with the teams only combining for two shots in the opening 30 minutes.

In the 36th minute, Michigan skimmed a header that went across the face of goal in one of its better chances of the half.

CSU had a good look in the 41st minute when senior captain Alec Nagucki used some combination play to shoot for the far post from 10 yards out, but the Wolverine keeper was able to make the save to keep the match scoreless at the half.

Michigan started the second half in style by scoring three times in the opening 15 minutes. The first goal game on a shot from distance while the next two strikes came from crosses from the flanks.

Cleveland State would get a goal back with about 20 minutes to play. Fewer than three minutes after entering the match, Nanchoff served a set piece in from the left flank, and Bielanski headed it home to open his collegiate account.

The Vikings nearly got back into the match in the 76th minute when freshman defender Thomas M'Barek had a pair of chances. The goalkeeper stuffed the first shot, but his attempt on the rebound had to be cleared off the line by a Wolverine.

Redshirt junior Madifing Conde made his Viking debut as a second half substitute while freshman Dan Manolache returned to action after missing CSU's last match.

Cleveland State continues its five match road trip with a match at nationally ranked Michigan State Monday, Sept. 4.
