CSU Outshoots Bowling Green but Drops Road Match

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Cleveland State University men's soccer team dropped its road opener, 2-0, at Bowling Green Tuesday evening at a wet Cochrane Stadium.

CSU had advantages in shots and shots on goal over the hosts, but the Vikings could not find a goal on the evening.

Junior Noah Pio and sophomore Gabriel Pewu tied for the match high with four shots each, combining to put five shots on target.

Cleveland State outshot the hosts, 6-2, in the opening half although neither team had an abundance of great looks at goal. After a somewhat slow start in the very early going, the Vikings began to generate a couple offensive forays.

In the 10th minute, Lawrence Karpeh tried to play Gabriel Pewu in on goal with a long ball, but Pewu was flagged for offside, much to the dismay of the CSU bench.

Sophomore Thomas Bielanski tallied the game's first shot in the 15th minute, an ambitious effort from well outside the box, but it was not that far wide of the right post. Junior Gianluca DiFranco put a nicely weighted free kick into the box in the 29th minute, but the hosts were able to deal with it and clear it out. Bielanski took a low effort in the 35th minute off a partially cleared corner, but the attempt was blocked before it could danger the BGSU goal.

Sophomore goaltender Sebastian Kalk got involved in the action right away, as he came out to the edge of the six-yard box in the opening minute to claim a long corner. He also punched a free kick away from danger in the 24th minute. Junior Antonio Burgoa, who entered the starting lineup after coming off the bench in the opener, had a fine interception of a BGSU cross in the 11th minute to clear the ball away from near the goal mouth.

The hosts had a header in the box in the 44th minute, from a cross played near the corner flag, but it sailed wide.

BGSU started the second half creating more chances than it had in the opening frame, and it paid off in the 64th minute. After sophomore Sebastian Kalk made a fine save on a close-range shot about three minutes earlier, the Falcons would find the net when a low shot was taken near the top of the 18-yard box into the corner after a cross from the right flank.

CSU took the game's next three shots, including one of its best looks of the match in the 78th minute. Junior Noah Pio played in a cross from the left flank and Pewu flicked a header to the far post that the keeper had to dive fully extended to knock out for a corner.

The Vikings had another decent look in the 82nd minute to even the match. After a free kick was deflected away by the wall, the Vikings sent a second ball back into the box, and Karpeh was able to get a free header, but it wasn't far away enough from the goaltender.

The Falcons put the match away with under four minutes to play with Cleveland State having reshuffled its back line and pushing numbers forward. After Kalk made an initial save, the rebound fell to a Falcon who slotted it home with Kalk still recovering from making the first stop.

Pewu had one final look for CSU late on in the match after freshman Zack Kluever flicked a header toward the center of the box on a cross. His low shot was snuffed out by the Falcons.

Cleveland State will continue its five-match road trip with two matches against Big Ten foes over Labor Day weekend, beginning with a match at Michigan Friday, Sept. 1.
