Week #2

THE OPENING KICK:
• After opening the regular season at home last weekend, Cleveland State embarks on a five match road trip with a pair of matches this week.
• CSU plays at Bowling Green Tuesday in its road opener. The all-time series between the Vikings and Falcons is dead even at 16-16-1.
• This will be the seventh straight season the teams have met on the pitch. Each of the past five matchups have ended with one team earning a shutout.
• The Vikings then begin Labor Day weekend at Michigan Friday, Sept. 1.
• CSU is 3-2 all-time vs. Michigan, but the teams have met only once since 2001. The Vikings won at Michigan, 3-0, in 2012 with three second-half scores.

LAST WEEK:
• Cleveland State began the season in style as it pulled away late to capture a 3-1 victory over Robert Morris, the first collegiate win for Kirk Harwat.
Gabriel Pewu opened the scoring for the Vikings in the 63rd minute. After RMU tied the match, Noah Pio had a brilliant strike for what proved to be the winner in the 77th minute. Lawrence Karpeh tacked on an insurance goal.

FREE KICKS:
• Kirk Harwat is in his first season as head coach for CSU after serving as an assistant for the program for the past five seasons.
• Senior midfielder Alec Nagucki, an All-Horizon League First Team honoree last season, has played in every match--all 56--since he arrived on campus.
• CSU has been seeded fourth or better in the Horizon League Tournament in eight of the past nine seasons.
• CSU lost two senior central defenders from last year's team that combined to play in 108 matches, with Sergio Manesio twice earning Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year honors. CSU started two true freshmen at central defense in its season-opening win.
• Eighteen of Cleveland State's last 21 goals have come in the second half. In fact, nine of those goals took place in the 77th minute or later.
• CSU was one of the most disciplined teams in the Horizon League in 2016. It accrued 20 total cards while every other team in the League was issued at least 28. The Vikings also had the second lowest number of fouls as well.
• There are 10 newcomers this season, nine freshmen and a junior college transfer. Last year, all eight Viking newcomers started at least one game.
Sebastian Kalk led the League in save percentage (.848) in 2016, a mark that ranked fifth in DI and best among freshmen. Kalk was among the top 30 nationally in saves/match and averaged a League-leading 5.5/match in League matches.
• The Vikings allowed the fewest goals in the Horizon League last season, conceding 16 goals in 17 matches. Cleveland State enters the week having allowed only 19 goals in its past 26 matches dating back to the 2015 season.
Brent Nanchoff and Jordan Ianiro each posted his first collegiate point with an assist in the season opener.
Gabriel Pewu has scored in three straight games in which he's played when counting CSU's exhibition matches.

UP NEXT:
• CSU continues its five match road trip with two more contests.
• The Vikings play nationally ranked Michigan State on Labor Day before beginning Horizon League action Saturday against League newcomer IUPUI.
