Head coach Dylan Sheridan announced the addition of Mark Frey as volunteer assistant coach in August 2017.

Frey had served as a collegiate head coach for the past 11 seasons, including taking a NCAA program from its inaugural season to its first conference championship.

“We are thrilled to welcome Coach Frey to the Viking lacrosse family,” Sheridan said. “Mark brings experience, energy and enthusiasm, which will endear him to the men, the department and the local lacrosse community.”

Frey was previously the head coach at Ferrum College, leading the program for each of its first seven seasons of existence.

Frey helped the squad to at least six wins in each of his first four seasons in charge of the Panthers despite the youth of the program.

In the 2015 season, Frey guided his squad to Southeast Independent Lacrosse Championship title, helping his team rally from an eight-goal deficit in the third quarter to pull out the win.

Frey helped his team repeat as SEILC champions the following season while also posting the first winning record in program history. As a result, Frey was named SEILC Coach of the Year.

Frey guided his squad to a berth in the SEILC title game again in 2017, becoming the only program to reach the title game in each season of the event.

Frey coached two different student-athletes to SEILC Defensive Player of the Year accolades within the past three years and also coached the 2017 SEILC Long-Stick Midfielder of the Year. He helped his student-athletes to 12 all-league selections in the past three years.

Prior his time at Ferrum, Frey was the head coach at Loyola Marymount of the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association.

Frey led the Lions to a 13-5 record in 2010, including a 3-2 mark in the Southwestern Lacrosse Conference, earning SLC Coach of the Year honors. It was the most successful season in LMU history and included wins over MCLA national tournament participants Colorado and Texas State.

The Lions also posted wins over Texas and Arizona in 2010, both top-25 teams. LMU closed out the season ranked 17th nationally. Frey also led the Lions to their first-ever playoff win, an 11-5 victory over San Diego in the 2010 SLC Tournament.

Loyola Marymount had a winning record in each of Frey’s four seasons at the helm.

Prior to becoming a head coach, Frey was the offensive coordinator at Chapman for three years. He had helped the Panthers to an 11-win turnaround before taking the top spot at LMU.

Frey began his collegiate playing career at Ohio State before transferring to McDaniel College, where he helped the Green Terror earn a top-10 national ranking.

A native of McLean, Va., Frey earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from McDaniel in 1998.
