CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University lacrosse team is in the midst of a month-long initiative to raise awareness and funds in the fight against pediatric cancer.

The CSU lacrosse team is partaking in No-Shave November, a month-long journey in which participants forgo shaving in order to evoke conversation and raise cancer awareness. The goal is to grow awareness by embracing people's hair, which many cancer patients lose.

The Viking lacrosse team has dedicated its No-Shave November to raising funds for Turner's Heroes. Turner's Heroes is named in honor of Turner Cockrell, a member of the Vanderbilt football team who passed away in November 2018 after approximately a year-long battle with cancer.

Turner's Heroes seeks to provide patients at children's hospitals a means of escape and enjoyment through superhero-themed events while also raising funds for pediatric cancer research. The organization funds Discovery Grants, which are administered through children's hospitals and provide financial backing to research teams that are investigating innovative approaches in the fight against cancer. Turner's Heroes is in the midst of a campaign to raise $100,000 for a Discovery Grant, and the Vikings hope to help the organization reach its goal.

The Viking student-athletes are making donations to the cause while also encouraging others to contribute to the worthwhile endeavor. The program has an initial goal of raising $8282 in an ode to Turner's uniform number of 82.

CSU captain Danny Tesler was a best friend and high school teammate of Turner's, which led to the Viking team supporting the organization. Tesler changed his uniform number to 82 prior to last season to honor the legacy of Turner Cockrell.
