Breakout Year Sees Bernlohr Win MLL Title, Major Award

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland State University lacrosse assistant coach Kyle Bernlohr had a standout sophomore season in the professional ranks.

Bernlohr experienced success on both the team and individual level during the recently concluded Major League Lacrosse (MLL) season.

As the starting goaltender for the Ohio Machine, Bernlohr helped the club to the MLL title with a 17-12 victory in the championship game over defending champion Denver Outlaws. It was the first title for the Ohio franchise that began play in 2012.

Bernlohr won the MLL's Most Improved Player award this season and was also a finalist for the Goalie of the Year honor. He led the league with a .567 save percentage, posting 140 saves in 10 games played. Bernlohr also led the league with a 11.35 goals against mark (min. 6 GP). He had previously earned a spot in the MLL All-Star game and was named Warrior Defensive Player of the Week in May after stopping 14 of 21 shots he faced in his first professional start. The Machine also honored Bernlohr by selecting him as the team's Defensive Player of the Year.

Bernlohr posted a double-digit save total in every start this past season and notched at least 14 saves on seven occasions. He twice reached the 20-save plateau, including a season-best 21 stops in the regular season finale against New York.

A northeast Ohio native, Bernlohr played a significant role in the Cleveland State's inaugural season that saw the program conclude the year with its first Division I win. Bernlohr coached the goalies, while aiding with instruction of the entire defense, and was instrumental in Caleb Espinoza garnering All-Freshman Team honors from College Crosse. Under Bernlohr's guidance, Espinoza led the nation by posting 13.6 saves per game against Division I opposition.
