Espinoza Selected to All-Freshman Team

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Goaltender Caleb Espinoza of the Cleveland State University lacrosse team was recently named to College Crosse's All-Freshman Team.

Espinoza, who earned an honorable mention selection, had some of the brightest individual performances during the Vikings' inaugural season. He was one of three Vikings to start every game in 2017, and he performed admirably despite his youth.

Espinoza finished with 176 saves, second among Division I freshmen, in just under 750 minutes in the cage. He posted a .521 save percentage, third among DI rookies, while helping Cleveland State to five wins on the season.

Espinoza sat fourth overall in Division I in saves per game. However, when games against only Division I opponents were counted, he led the nation by averaging 13.6 saves per game.

Espinoza notched double-digit saves in 12 of his 14 games, including each of the final 10 of the season. He posted at least 16 saves on four occasions, including contributing a season-best 19 at No. 1 Denver, the most saves by a Pioneer opponent in Denver's last 43 games.

Espinoza improved as the season progressed as he posted a .571 save percentage over the final six games of the season. He contributed 13 saves while allowing only six goals to help Cleveland State to its first win over a Division I opponent in the season finale.

Espinoza and his defensive teammates often had the unenviable task of facing top-tier offenses. Four of Cleveland State's opponents finished among the top 10 in scoring, and six were within the top 20. In similar fashion, five of CSU's opponents were among the top 15 nationally in offensive efficiency.
