Men's Golf Moves Up To 10th At John Piper Intercollegiate

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Cleveland State moved up two spots in Tuesday's final round at the John Piper Intercollegiate to finish10th out of a field of 16 schools. Marquette ran away with the team title at the Stone Ridge Golf Course, finishing with a three-round total of 852 (-12) -- 11 shots ahead of runner-up Ohio. The Vikings closed with a 300, leaving them at +34 for the season-opening event.

"We have a very young team this year and I thought they showed more and more confidence as the tournament progressed," CSU head coach Tom Porten noted. "This was a respectable start to the season and it was nice because we got a look at every league team but Loyola."

Individually, Longwood's Chris Shuford fired a final round 69 to claim medalist honors with an eight-under 208. Craig Pickerel (Bowling Green) and Joe Weber (Marquette) finished tied for second, two shots out of the lead. Sophomore Ben Grandy (Southgate, Mich./Gabriel Richard) led the Vikings with a 217 (+1) to finish 13th. Sophomore Mike Rutgers (Kingsville, Ontario/Cardinal Carter) tied for 15th, two shots back of Grandy.

Cleveland State is in action again on Sept. 20-21 when the Vikings travel to Indianapolis for the Butler Fall Invitational at Eagle Creek GC.
