Steve Weir has put his stamp on the Cleveland State men’s and women’s golf programs during his 16 years at the helm. During his tenure, the men’s squad has captured nine Horizon League titles and NCAA appearances, while the women's program has continued to show improvement, culminating with the first League title in progam history in 2016-17.

2022-23 saw Weir assume head coaching duties for both the men's and women's programs, and both teams experienced tremendous success. Both teams finished in the top four in the Horizon League Tournament. In addition, Sabrina Coffman won the first ever Horizon League individual title in women's program history, earning her a spot in NCAA Regionals in the process. 

A tireless recruiter, Weir has continually brought in highly-decorated players, including several all-state selections and student-athletes who have competed in and won prestigious tournaments.

In his 16 seasons at the helm, Weir has developed over 40 All-Horizon League players, including Jake Scott who claimed medalist honors at the League championship in 2008 and 2009, Kent Monas, the 2011 Horizon League Player of the Year and Andrew Bailey who was the 2012, 2013 and 2014 Horizon League Player of the Year.

The 2018 season saw the Vikings men's team capture their fifth consecutive Horizon League title. Cleveland State took the lead for good on the second day of the tournament with a 292 and cruised to an 18-stroke victory.

In 2017, Weir guided both the men's and women's squads to the Horizon League Championships and berths in the NCAA Regionals. The men won their fourth straight title as Anton Krecic claimed medalist honors in a playoff, while Rayna Oosterhuis' runner-up finish helped the women's team to the League championship.

The men led the League tournament from start to finish, while the women shot a second round 302 to vault from fourth place into first place en route to the title.

Weir has also led the men’s squad to League titles and bids to the NCAA Regionals in 2008, 2009, 2011, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Under Weir’s direction, 16 men’s players have earned medalist honors, while the 2007-08 squad set the school record for lowest round, firing 277 during the first and second rounds at the IPFW Fall Classic.

In addition, the 2016-17 squad set the school record for lowest scoring average in a season at 294.5.

Weir has also led the women’s program to new heights his tenure at CSU, including the first League title in program history in 2016-17. The team fired the lowest round in school history – a 296 – at the YSU Invitational in 2014, while last year’s squad set the program record for scoring average in a season (317.2).

Four players have also claimed medalist honors under Weir’s guidance.

But Weir’s successes go beyond the course as both teams have also been successful in the classroom. That was never more apparent than 2009 when the women’s team captured the “Best of the Best” Team Award at the John Konstantinos Athletic Academic Honors Luncheon. The award, presented to the sport having the highest team grade point average in the athletics department, went to the women’s squad which boasted a 3.71 team GPA with all six student-athletes having at least a 3.20.

The women’s squad once again captured the award in 2014 after the team combined for a 3.511 GPA and again in 2017 with a 3.67 GPA.

Weir joined the CSU golf staff as an assistant coach in 2007 with a familiarity to the Viking program, having served as an assistant coach to the men’s and women’s squads in 2006-07. He has also been the Assistant Golf Professional at Pine Hills Golf Club in Hinkley since April, 2007.

He had an outstanding collegiate career, spending time at Kent State and Baldwin-Wallace before enrolling at CSU in September of 2005.

In his lone golf season as a Viking, Weir earned first team All-Horizon League honors in 2006 and was a two-time Horizon League Golfer of the Week.

He was second on the team in stroke average (75.3), carding a school-record, eight-under-par 63 en route to a runner-up finish at the Belmont Intercollegiate. Weir also finished second at the Dayton Spring Invitational, helping the Vikings win the team title by eight shots.

Weir was a large factor in the Vikings claiming the 2006 Horizon League Championship and advancing to the NCAA regionals, shooting rounds of 70-72-74 (216) and finishing 11th overall.

In 2005, Weir captured the Greater Cleveland Amateur Championship and also advanced to the match play portion of the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.

At Baldwin-Wallace, Weir holds the best season average in school-history when he posted 75.2 strokes per round in the fall of 2003, including a low round of 70.

Weir and his wife, Alicia, have an eight-year old daughter, Kinslee, a six-year old son, Bryce and a three-year old son, Parker.
