John Powers is in his second season as the associate head golf coach at Cleveland State.

In his first season at the helm, Powers was instrumental in helping the women's team capture the first Horizon League Championship in program history, as well as a berth in the NCAA regionals.

The team, which featured two juniors, one sophomore and two freshmen in the lineup, finished the season with a single season school record scoring average of 317.2, breaking the old mark of 320.0 set in 2012-13. In addition, the Vikings won two events, claiming the second win in school history at the Golden Grizzlies Invitational (Sept. 26-27) and defeating Oakland and Youngstown State in a tri-meet in Florida on Feb. 21.

CSU's round of 301 in the final round of the EKU Colonel Classic - with the Vikings playing with just four players - was the second lowest round in school history, while the second round 302 at the League Championship was the third lowest round in school history.

In addition, he helped the men's squad claim its fourth straight League title and automatic bid to the NCAA regionals.

Powers joined the Vikings after serving as an assistant coach for the Bowling Green women's program in 2015-16. During his year at BGSU, Powers helped the team post five top-five finishes, including victories at the 2015 Redbird Invitational and the Snowman Classic.

In addition, the team set a program record for lowest 54-hole total with a score of 901 at the ORU/SFA Spring Break Invitational in march. It eclipsed the old record by two shots, which was set during the fall seasons. The Falcons also set two program records at the 2016 MAC Championship, carding a team score of 913, the lowest 54-hole total in school history at the conference championship. In addition, BGSU's first round score of 295 was the lowest 18-hole total at the conference championship.

The 2015-16 team set a school record for single season stroke average with a 307.8.

In addition, four players were named to the 2016 MAC Women's Golf Academic All-MAC Team, as Bowling Green led the conference with four student-athletes selected to the 2016 squad.

Powers was on the Bowling Green golf team from 2006-10, posting a 75.2 career scoring average, including a career-low round of 67. He recorded 10 top-15 place finishes during his career, including medalist honors at the 2007 UD Spring Invitational.

During his amateur career, Powers qualified for three USGA National Championships. In 2005 he placed 15th in the USGA Junior Amateur Championship and earned a spot in the USGA Public Links Championship. He again qualified for the USGA Public Links in 2007.

He served as the head coach at St. Bonaventure from 2011-14 and was a golf club intern at Ohio State University during the 2010 golfing season.

Powers graduated from BGSU with a degree in sport management with an emphasis in sport marketing. While with the Falcons, he was also a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. He went on to complete his master's degree in integrated marketing communications at St. Bonaventure.
