WESTLAKE, Ohio – Sophomores Zach Robbins and Zak Supelak both finished the day among the top 10 to lead the Cleveland State University men's golf team to second place after the opening day of the Tom Tontimonia Invitational Monday at a mostly sunny and warm Lakewood Country Club.
Hosting at the par-71, 7,104-yard course, CSU shot +8 (292) in the opening round before gaining six shots on the second 18, shooting +2 (286). The Vikings are alone in second with their cumulative score of +10 (578).
Robbins' second round highlighted the opening day for the Vikings as he shot a career-low 66 (-5). Starting on the par-3 third, Robbins birdied four of his first six holes. After a bogey on 10, he birdied the par-4 13th and par-3 16th. He then birdied the par-4 first to get to -6 before a bogey on his final hole left him with a team season low score.
Robbins had two birdies and a half dozen bogeys in his opening round for a +4 (75). He sits at -1 (141) for the tournament and is in a tie for sixth.
Supelak made five birdies in his opening round, including back-to-back on the par-5 14th and par-4 15th, to post -1 (70). He made a trio of birdies in the second round, again featuring ones on back-to-back holes on the par-5 sixth and par-4 seventh, against a pair of bogeys to post -1 yet again. Supelak is at -2 (140) for the event, tied for third and just one shot out of the lead.
Senior Anton Krecic finished at +3 (74) in his opening round before shooting +1 (72) in the second 18, which featured an eagle on the par-5 sixth. Krecic, who did not make a double bogey (or worse) all day is at +4 (146) for the event and is among the top 20.
Sophomore Jules Blakely shot 73-79 to finish at +10 (152) while freshman Miles DeMuesy shot 77-78 to finish the day at +13 (155).
Freshman Jack Hanus, playing as an individual, bounced back nicely from an opening-round 77 (+6) to shoot an even-par 71 on his second 18 holes. He made four birdies, including two on his final five holes, four bogeys and 10 pars in his second round.
Robbins' second round was the 10th round of 66 or better in program history. Supelak's pair of 70's tied his season low and were his team-leading third and fourth rounds of par or better this season.
The final 18 holes of the tournament will be played Tuesday with a 9:15 a.m. shotgun start. The Vikings will be paired with Dayton and Oakland.
