Vikings to Compete at Firestone Invite for First Time

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University men's golf team continues its fall schedule with its third of five events as the Vikings take part in the Firestone Invitational to begin the week.

The tournament, hosted by Akron at the par-72, 7,125-yard Firestone Country Club North Course, takes place Monday, Oct. 1, and Tuesday, Oct. 2. This is the 10th year of the event but marks the first time that Cleveland State will be taking part. The 54-hole event will see teams play a continuous 36 holes on Monday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The teams will play the final 18 holes Tuesday with teams teeing off from the first and 10th holes beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Firestone Country Club opened for play in 1929 while the North Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones, opened in 1969.

Seventeen teams will competing in the event: Akron, Ball State, Cleveland State, Connecticut, Dartmouth, Dayton, Eastern Michigan, Furman, Illinois State, Mount St. Mary's, Ohio, Old Dominion, South Carolina Aiken, Temple, William & Mary, Winthrop and Youngstown State.

Cleveland State will play with Youngstown State and a group of five individuals in the opening two rounds. The Vikings will tee off on holes 16-18.

Cleveland State finished ninth of 15 teams last time out at the Raising Cane's EKU Intercollegiate with a 54-hole score of 872. Sophomore Zach Robbins fired a career-low 68 in the opening round en route to a tournament total of 214, a 54-hole career best. Robbins was the top CSU finisher, tying for 13th.

The five Vikings in the lineup last time out all have season averages within 1.8 strokes of each other. Robbins tops the group, averaging 73.2 strokes per round in the early going.

Cleveland State will be right back in action next week as it hosts the Tom Tontimonia Invitational at Lakewood CC.
