RICHMOND, Ky. - The Cleveland State University men's golf team finished the opening day of the Raising Cane's EKU Intercollegiate tied for fourth of 15 teams competing.
The Vikings fired 574 (+14) over the opening 36 holes at the 6,623-yard University Club at Arlington. They sit three strokes behind third-place Morehead State.
CSU tied for the second-lowest opening round of the tournament with a +5 (285).
Sophomore Zach Robbins has the best score thus far for the Vikings, sitting one shot outside the top 10 at +2 (142). Robbins fired a career-low 68 in the opening round, the lowest by a Viking on the young season.
After opening the tournament with a bogey, Robbins used five birdies, including back-to-back on the par-4 11th and par-5 12th, against just two bogeys over the remaining 17 holes to start his event on a strong note. He shot +4 (74) over the second 18 and did not make a double bogey (or worse) all day.
Senior Anton Krecic and sophomore Jules Blakely sit one shot behind Robbins at the end of day one, as the duo played steady golf throughout the day.
Krecic shot an even-par 70 in the opening round, his second straight round at or under par. He made five birdies in his opening round, including three in a four-hole stretch on 12, 13 and 15. Krecic birdied three of his final five holes in Saturday's second round to salvage a 73, putting him at +3 (143).
Blakely made two birdies, three bogeys and 13 pars in his opening round to shoot +1 (71). He played the final 14 holes of the second round in -1 to finish with a 72, leaving him tied with Krecic. Blakely played only five holes over par among the 36, the lowest among Vikings on the day.
After shooting 76 in the opening round, sophomore Zak Supelak bounced back nicely, especially in the back half of his second round. He played his final 10 holes in -2 to finish the second 18 with an even-par 70, tying his career-low round. He will open the final round sitting at +6 (146).
Freshman Jack Hanus used 156 strokes to complete the 36 holes Saturday.
Robbins is tied for second in par-4 scoring (3.88). Cleveland State is tied for second in the field with 106 pars while Blakely is tied for second in pars with 26.
Sunday's final round will begin with a 8:30 a.m. shotgun start, a time that was moved earlier in the hopes of finishing before the precipitation in the forecast.
