Vikings Lead Horizon League Championship After Opening Round

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - Cleveland State shot an opening round 294 and is in first place at the Horizon League Championship that began on Sunday morning at the par-72, 6,768-yard Mission Inn Resort El Campeon Course.

CSU is going after its fourth straight League title and eighth in the last 12 years.

The Vikings will enter the second round with a three shot lead over Valparaiso (297) and seven shot advantage over Oakland (301). Detroit Mercy is in fourth place after day one at 302, while Wright State (303), Northern Kentucky (307), Green Bay (310) and Youngstown State (319) round out the field.

Sophomore Anton Krecic started his round with an eagle on the par-five opening hole and added another birdie on the front nine and two more on the back nine to shoot a one-under-par 71. He is tied for second place, one shot behind Detroit Mercy's Kyle Gaines who leads the field after a 70.

Krecic's three birdies were tied for the second most in the field and he was one of just four players to make an eagle today.

Senior Patrick Luth shot an opening round one-over-par 73 and is tied for sixth place. He birdied the 10th hole and made eight straight pars coming in to shoot one-under-par 36 on the back nine.

Junior Blake Prince shot 74 and is tied for 11th place, while junior Joey Krecic and sophomore Nick Infanti both shot 76 and are tied for 18th place.

As a team, the Vikings played the par-five's in five-under-par and the par-three's in one-over-par, both best in the field. CSU was also second in the field with 56 pars and 12 birdies.

The second round of the League Championship will be played on Tuesday morning.
