Three-Time Defending Champion CSU Heads to Horizon League Championship

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State men's golf team, which has won the last three Horizon League Championships and seven of the last 11, heads to Florida for the League Championship from Sunday through Tuesday (April 23-25) at Mission Inn Resort.

CSU has captured League titles in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

At last year's championship, the Vikings were in second place after the first day before shooting a one-under-par in round two to take the lead en route to an eight-shot victory over Oakland.

Joey Krecic finished as the runner-up, while Patrick Luth placed third as the duo both earned spots on the all-tournament team.

This year's squad has been one of the deepest and most consistent under 10th-year head coach Steve Weir as the team sports a 293.6 scoring average, which is currently the lowest for a season in school history (last year's team holds the record at 295.3).

CSU has four top-three finishes this year, including a runner-up finish at the Villanova Wildcat Invitational in late March, a tournament that featured 19 teams. CSU also placed third of 13 teams in its most recent event, the play six, count five Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational (April 14-15).

Luth leads the team and ranks second in the Horizon League with a 72.3 scoring average, which is currently tied with Andrew Bailey (2013-14) for the lowest average in a season in school history. Luth has fired 16 rounds of par or better this year, posting five top-10 finishes, including three top-five's.

His 65 at the Marshall Invitational is tied for the lowest round by a League player this year and he has been CSU's top finisher at six of the 10 events this year, including a win at the Wildcat Invitational (March 28-29).

Anton Krecic is second on the team and sixth in the League with a 74.1 scoring average, while Blake Prince is right behind him at 74.2.

Krecic has three top-10 finishes this year with six rounds of par or better, while Prince has seven rounds of par or better and is coming off his lone top-five finish of the season at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational.

Prince fired three straight rounds of even-par 70 to finish fourth at the event.

Joey Krecic, a member of the All-Horizon League first team last season has posted a 74.9 scoring average this year, while Nick Infanti is averaging 75.3. Krecic is 11th in the League in scoring, while Infanti ranks 17th.

The winner of the Horizon League Championship will earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals which will run from May 15-17 in Auburn, Wash., Austin, Texas, Baton Rouge, La., College Grove, Tenn., Stanford, Calif., and West Lafayette, Ind.

The selection show is slated for Thursday (May 4) at 12:00 pm on the Golf Channel.
