WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Tre Gomillion and Algevon Eichelberger combined to score 24 points and grab 23 rebounds and Cleveland State turned in a brilliant defensive effort to defeat Eastern Kentucky 65-51 on Saturday in the Vikings final game of the Battle of the Capital Tournament in the DC Entertainment & Sports Arena.
Gomillion and Eichelberger were each named to the Battle for the Capital All-Tournament team after leading Cleveland State to a 2-1 tourney record. The Vikings defeated UNC Wilmington and Eastern Kentucky and were the only team to go undefeated in the games played in the nation's capital.
Gomillion recorded his first career double-double as he finished with 15 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. He was 11-of-12 from the foul line and also added two assists.
Eichelberger, who had a double-double in the Vikings victory over UNC Wilmington, finished with nine points, seven rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal.
After holding UNC Wilmington to just 27.3 percent shooting on Friday night, Cleveland State turned in an even better defensive performance on Saturday as the Vikings held Eastern Kentucky to just 25.5 percent shooting for the game.
The Colonels, who dropped to 3-4 on the season, were limited to just 20.8 percent shooting in the second half on 5-of-24 shooting.
After Ty Taylor made a jumper that trimmed the Vikings lead to 33-31 at the 18:35 mark of the second half, Cleveland State would not permit the Colonels to score a basket for the next 15:08 of the game.
During the stretch, Cleveland State turned a slim two-point lead into a comfortable 14-point lead.
Cleveland State, which improved to 3-4 on the season, dominated the boards 49-31 and owned a 32-12 advantage on points in the paint.
