DETROIT -- Freshman Rashad Williams scored a team-high 19 points leading three Cleveland State players in double figures, but Detroit Mercy converted 25-of-32 free throws on its way to a 78-64 Horizon League victory over the Vikings on Thursday in Calihan Hall.
Williams, who was named the Horizon League Freshman of the Week on Monday, was 7-of-14 from the floor and 5-of-10 from the three-point line to lead the Vikings in scoring for the second consecutive game.
Algevon Eichelberger also reached double figures in scoring with 13 points, while Stefan Kenic added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Vikings.
Detroit Mercy outscored the Vikings 25-7 from the free throw line and got a game-high 29 points from Antoine Davis.
Cleveland State, which played without Tyree Appleby and Jaalam Hill, used an 8-0 run midway through the first period to build a five-point lead. Trailing 15-12, the Vikings got a jumper from Deante Johnson and back-to-back three-pointers from Dibaji Walker and Williams to take a 20-15 lead with 11:07 to play in the opening half.
The Titans rallied to take the lead on a jumper by Davis with 8:07 to play in the opening half and took a 38-28 lead into halftime.
Detroit Mercy, which improved to 9-13 overall and 6-4 in the Horizon League, opened the second half on a 9-0 run to extend the lead to 47-28 with 16:08 to play in the game.
Cleveland State, which dropped to 6-17 overall and 1-9 in league play, used a 7-0 run to get to within 67-54 with 4:32 to play in the game.
The Titans sealed the victory by making seven consecutive free throws to end the game.
Cleveland State returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 2) when it visits Oakland for a Horizon League game scheduled for a 3 p.m. tip.
