Aleksa Popovic Commits to CSU Men’s Basketball

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland State head men's basketball coach Dennis Felton has announced that Aleksa Popovic (Belgrade, Serbia) has formally committed to join the Viking basketball program for the 2018-19 season.

Felton is looking forward to seeing what the 6-foot-9, 215-pound Popovic can bring to CSU from southeastern Europe.

"We're all very excited to welcome Aleksa to our family," Felton said. "He's one of the top young players in Serbia, a basketball rich country which produces some of the best players in the world. We look forward to him forging a basketball identity in the U.S."

Popovic played in every game for the Partizan U-19 team this past season, one of the premier clubs in Europe. He scored 13.9 points per game while shooting over 51% from the field. He averaged 6.2 rebounds per game while adding 1.7 assists per game, 1.5 blocks per game and 1.1 steals per game. Popovic helped the team to a 14-6 mark in the regular season.

"Aleksa is long, skilled and motivated to maximize his wide range of talents while helping his teammates build a championship-caliber program," Felton said. "He fits nicely into our positionless system of basketball. With the support of his new teammates, I envision Aleksa making a successful transition to NCAA basketball and becoming a player who makes great contributions to our program."

Popovic won a bronze medal at the U-19 Serbian Championship this year and won a gold medal at the same event in 2016.

Popovic is the fifth future Viking to commit to Cleveland State this spring as Jaalam Hill, Seth Millner and Dibaji Walker signed NLI's in April while Rasheem Dunn will be joining the program as a transfer from St. Francis Brooklyn. Deante "Spider" Johnson and Rashad Williams also signed NLI's with the program in the fall early signing period.

The Vikings advanced to the Horizon League Championship game this past season in Felton's first year as head coach. It was CSU's first title game appearance since 2009.
