Flannigan Posts Double Double, But Vikings Fall to Wright State in Double OT

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Demonte Flannigan posted his seventh career double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds, but Wright State used 26 points from Grant Benzinger and 17 points by Steven Davis to earn a 74-68 win in double overtime over Cleveland State on Saturday afternoon in the Wolstein Center.

CSU fell to 8-20 overall and 4-12 in the Horizon League, while the Raiders moved to 19-9 overall (10-5 HL).

STAT LEADERS

• Flannigan hit 8-of-12 from the field, including all three of his three-pointers, for his 22 points. • He added 11 boards for his second double-double of the season. Both have come against Wright State.
• Flannigan played a career-high 44 minutes.
Rob Edwards scored 17 points with eight rebounds in a career-high 41 minutes.
Bobby Word played 49 minutes, the fifth most in a game in program history and the most by a CSU player since Trey Lewis played 53 in a triple overtime game at Drexel in 2013.
• Word finished with 16 points, five rebounds and two steals.
Kasheem Thomas scored eight points, while Terrell Hales grabbed four rebounds in his first start of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Rob Edwards missed a jumper from just inside the three-point line at the end of regulation and the teams headed to overtime tied at 53-53.
• Davis gave the Raiders a 60-58 lead with 43 seconds to play, but Flannigan's dunk along the baseline tied the game at 60-60 with 27 seconds to play.
• WSU had a chance to win the game in the first overtime, but Justin Mitchell lost control of the ball going up for a shot as time expired.
• Back-to-back jumpers from Benzinger and Davis gave the Raiders a 67-62 lead with 2:17 to play in the second overtime.
• Flannigan answered with a three-pointer to slice the lead to 67-65, but the Raiders scored the next six points until Thomas hit a three-pointer with seven seconds to play to make it 73-68.
• The Vikings built a 12 point lead (26-14) in the first half, but Wright State was able to cut it in half (28-22) at halftime.
• Wright State took its first lead (36-35) since early in the first half with 12:38 left in regulation and with the game tied at 44-44 with 8:48 left, the Vikings used a 7-2 run to open up a five point lead (51-46) with just under five minutes to play.
• The Raiders scored the next five points to tie the game at 51-51 with 3:38 to play and neither team would score again until Flannigan's hook shot in the lane with 23 seconds to play.
• Mark Alstork knocked down a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left to tie the contest at 53-53 and Edwards' long two-point attempt for the win was off.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

• CSU out-rebounded Wright State, 39-38, and had 11 offensive rebounds.
• Seven different players played at least 40 minutes, four for the Vikings and three for Wright State.
• Today was the third overtime game of the year for the Vikings (vs. Kent State, vs. Green Bay). • CSU fell to 0-3 in overtime games this year.
• Today's game was the first double overtime game at home for CSU since a 79-75 setback to Butler on Feb. 24, 2003.
• The Raiders shot 6-of-9 from the field in the overtime periods and hit 8-of-11 from the field.
• CSU held Wright State's leading scorer Mark Alstork to just seven points on 1-of-11 shooting from the field. He came into the game averaging 19.0 points.

UP NEXT

• The Vikings travel to Detroit Mercy on Tuesday (Feb. 21) for a 7:00 pm contest. It will be the final road game of the regular season.
• CSU concludes the regular season on Saturday (Feb. 25) when the Vikings host Youngstown State at 3:30 pm in the Wolstein Center.
• It will be a doubleheader with the CSU women hosting Oakland at 1:00 pm.
