CLEVELAND, Ohio – Demonte Flannigan scored 21 points and Rob Edwards had 19 as Cleveland State led for nearly the entire game in a 73-62 win over Bethune-Cookman on Saturday afternoon at Quicken Loans Arena.

CSU improved to 2-5 this year, while B-CU fell to 2-6.

STAT LEADERS

  • Flannigan recorded his fifth career 20-point game, hitting 8-of-17 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line for 21 points. He just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.
  • Edwards scored his 19 points on 5-of-11 shooting and also made eight of 14 from the free throw line. He added three rebounds and five assists.
  • Bobby Word scored eight points, while Jibri Blount tallied six points, seven rebounds and three steals.
  • Kenny Carpenter finished with five points and four rebounds, while Jamarcus Hairston tallied four points and five rebounds.
  • Evan Clayborne scored four points with two rebounds in five minutes of action and Kasheem Thomas totaled five rebounds and three assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • CSU used a layup and three-pointer from Bobby Word to build a 12-4 lead six minutes into the contest.
  • Back-to-back three-pointers from Brandon Tabb brought the Wildcats within two at 12-10 and B-CU was still within three points (19-16) at the 8:40 mark of the first half.
  • An 11-2 run by the Vikings over the next five minutes allowed CSU to build a 12-point advantage (30-18) on a layup from Jibri Blount.
  • The Wildcats scored the next four points to cut the lead to eight points, but CSU closed the half on an 8-2 run to take a 38-24 lead at the half.
  • CSU would maintain a double-digit lead for the rest of the second half with the largest lead of 17 points on four different occasions.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • CSU held Behtune-Cookman to .373 (25-67) shooting from the field.
  • The Vikings scored 40 points in the paint and held a 14-6 advantage in bench points.
  • Both teams crashed the offensive glass with CSU grabbing 16 which led to 16 second chance points and B-CU grabbing 21, leading to 11 second chance points.
  • The Vikings committed just 10 turnovers, tying a season low.
  • CSU forced 15 turnovers and turned them into 22 points.
  • BC-U head coach Gravelle Craig is a CSU alum. He was a First Team All-Mid-Continent performer in 1992-93. Craig helped the Vikings to the Mid-Con Championship in 1993 and holds the Mid-Continent Tournament single-game record for assists (14).

  • The Vikings remain home to host Western Michigan on Wednesday (Dec. 7) at 7:00 pm at Quicken Loans Arena.
  • CSU will also travel to #15 Purdue next Saturday (Dec. 10) for a 12:00 pm contest.
