
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Cleveland State University fencing teams had a successful opening weekend of the 2019-20 season Sunday at the OSU Duals inside Ohio State's French Field House.
The CSU men posted a 5-1 mark, highlighted by the foil unit besting that of the host Buckeyes, while the Viking women posted a 4-2 mark on the day.
The CSU men claimed their five wins with ease, topping Case Western Reserve (18-9), Iowa (27-0), Xavier (24-3), Michigan (19-8) and Bowling Green (26-1). The Vikings came up on the short end of 20-7 decision to Ohio State although the foil unit notched five of those points.
The CSU women took care of Case Western (16-4), Iowa (24-0), Xavier (17-4) and Bowling Green (27-0) while dropping matchups to Michigan (10-17) and Ohio State (4-23).
The foil unit led the way for the CSU men Sunday, claiming 45 victories while suffering just nine defeats. The group posted a 5-4 victory over Ohio State with Ahmad Taqi and Paul DiVenti each winning twice against the Buckeyes.
The epee unit was the top point-scorer for the Cleveland State women, racking up 40 victories against just 14 defeats. The group lost a tight, 5-4 matchup to Ohio State although Abigail Barr posted a pair of wins against the Buckeyes.
Cleveland State will return to action on the final weekend of October as it hosts a pair of events Oct. 26-27.
