CSU Men Knock Off Caltech to Close Weekend

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Cleveland State University fencing team competed in the second and final day of the Northwestern Duals Sunday on Wilson Field inside Ryan Fieldhouse.

The CSU men went 1-5 on the day while the Viking women, competing with a half-strength side, went 0-6. Both sides faced multiple nationally ranked programs on the day.

The Viking men lost to Incarnate Word (9-18), No. 10 Duke (2-25), No. 5 Princeton (2-25), Air Force (8-19) and University of California San Diego (7-20) before finishing strong with a win over Caltech (16-11). The Falcons and Tritons are both receiving votes nationally as well.

With only four or five women competing in each match, the Cleveland State women suffered setbacks to Air Force (4-23), University of California San Diego (4-23), North Carolina (6-21), No. 8 Duke (1-26), No. 2 Northwestern (1-26) and Caltech (10-17).

In the men's victory over Caltech, the Vikings got four points from their saber unit and six each from their foil and epee squads.

Freshman Ian Wu led the CSU men with seven victories on the day while classmate Will Waters and junior Jonah Kasallis each notched six victories for the epee unit. Sophomore Ahmad Taqi led the foil unit with six victories on the day.

Freshman Abigail Barr led the CSU women with multiple victories in four of the six matches as she finished with a team-leading 11 on the epee unit. She had at least one victory in every match. Classmate Claire Maltman led the foil unit with six victories on the day.

Cleveland State will close the regular season next weekend by hosting the annual John Szent-Kiraly Open Saturday, Feb. 9.
