Men Top Lawrence at Northwestern Duals

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Cleveland State University fencing team competed in the first day of the Northwestern Duals Saturday inside Wilson Field at Ryan Fieldhouse.

The CSU men went 1-3 on the day while a less than full strength Viking women's squad went 0-4.

The Viking men lost to North Carolina (3-24) and Northwestern (8-19) before rallying for a win over Lawrence. CSU ended its day with a loss to Stanford (3-24). The Tar Heels and Cardinal are the first two teams outside the national top 10.

With just five Vikings competing, the Cleveland State women suffered setbacks to Fairleigh Dickinson (11-13), Stanford (2-25), Incarnate Word (4-19) and Lawrence (12-13). The Cardinal are also receiving votes nationally on the women's side.

In the men's victory over Lawrence, the Vikings got nine points from their saber unit and four each from foil and epee.

Sophomore Ahmad Taqi earned two of three points against North Carolina in the foil and also picked up one against Stanford. Freshman Ian Wu notched five victories on the day, including two each against Lawrence and Northwestern.

Freshmen Claire Maltman and Shelbie Seeberg both picked up seven victories in 12 chances Saturday in women's foil action.

Freshman Abigail Barr matched that level in epee as she also garnered seven wins on the day.

Cleveland State will conclude action in the Northwestern Duals Sunday with six more duals for each gender.
