Vikings Combine for 11 Wins to Open Dual Season

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Cleveland State University fencing team competed in dual action for the first time this season Sunday at the OSU Duals inside French Field House.

The men's and women's teams combined for 11 wins with the CSU men going 5-1 and the Viking women posting a 4-2 mark.

The men defeated Michigan State to open the day with a 16-11 score that would prove to be their closest contest of the event. The Vikings then topped Bowling Green (25-2) before falling to Ohio State (6-21). Cleveland State ended its day with a trio of convincing wins—18-9 over Indiana, 24-3 over Iowa and 22-5 over Xavier.

The women's team eked out a nailbiter in their opening dual, claiming a 14-13 win over Michigan State. After a 20-1 win over Bowling Green, the Vikings fell to the Buckeyes (6-21) and Indiana (10-17). Cleveland State ended its day with a pair of comfortable wins, defeating Iowa, 20-3, and Xavier, 17-4.

The foil team led the Viking men by collecting 48 of a possible 54 points. CSU shut out four opponents in foil and only lost to the powerful Buckeye squad by a one-point margin in that discipline. The epee team also picked up 42 points for Cleveland State.

Cleveland State will host the 13th annual Fencers Attacking Diabetes event this weekend in Woodling Gym.
