Live Results - NCAA Midwest Regional
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University fencing program will host the NCAA Midwest Regional this weekend as student-athletes from around the region look to secure a spot at the NCAA Championships later this month.
This is the third time this century that Cleveland State has hosted the Midwest Regional, with the Viking program also hosting in 2012 and 2006.
The event will be held in Woodling Gymnasium in the Physical Education Center on CSU's campus. Admission to the event is free. Live results will be available by clicking here.
The women's portion of the competition, in all three weapons, will begin at 9:00 a.m. The men's competition will begin at 12:30 p.m. provided that the women's competition has ended in sufficient time. Each event will be a round-robin format.
The following numbers of competitors are expected in each discipline based on the entry forms submitted by teams: Women's Epee: 15, Women's Foil: 17, Women's Sabre: 14, Men's Epee: 10, Men's Foil: 8, Men's Sabre: 11.
Three Vikings are expected to compete Saturday, two of which are freshmen. Senior Sarah Mok and freshman Emma Hartlaub will both compete in the women's foil competition while freshman Declan Forth will compete in men's sabre action.
The 2018 National Collegiate Men's and Women's Fencing Championships will take place March 22-25 at Penn State. Selections to the Championships will be announced Tuesday, March 13. A maximum of 24 participants in each event will advance to the NCAA Championships, with not more than two per event from one institution.
The two primary factors for determining selections into the Championships are the Fencer's Seeding Factor (FSF), which is weighted 40%, and the individual's placement at NCAA regional competition, which is weighted 60%. The FSF measures a fencer's performance against his or her opponents during regular-season competition.
The Midwest Region has the following allocations to the NCAA Championships this year:
Women's Epee: 5, Women's Foil: 6, Women's Sabre: 4, Men's Epee: 4, Men's Foil: 4, Men's Sabre: 5. There are also two at-large selections in each event that are made on a national basis.
