Vikings Compete at NU Duals

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Cleveland State University fencing team competed at Northwestern's prestigious NU Duals Sunday inside the Castellan Family Fencing Center on the campus of Notre Dame.

The CSU men suffered setbacks to seven foes while the Viking women dropped six matchups on the day. Both the men and women were competing with only five student-athletes for the duration of the day.

On the men's side, Cleveland State lost to Incarnate Word (8-16), No. 10 Stanford (2-25), Air Force (4-23), Caltech (10-17), No. 9 Duke (1-26), San Diego (1-26) and Lawrence (7-19). In addition to facing two ranked foes, both Air Force and San Diego are receiving votes nationally.

On the women's side, Cleveland State lost to Incarnate Word (13-13; lost on foil indicator), Lawrence (2-25), Air Force (0-27), Caltech (6-20), Duke (0-27) and Fairleigh Dickinson (9-16). The Air Force and Duke squads that the women faced are both receiving votes nationally.

The saber side led the way for the CSU men by collecting 17 points on the day. Freshman Declan Forth collected 11 points for the Vikings while classmate Zachary Clark notched seven victories on the day in epee.

Freshman Emma Hartlaub led the way for the CSU women with seven victories on the day in foil.

Cleveland State will take the next weeks off from competition as it gears up for the Midwestern Conference Championships on the final weekend of February.
