Cleveland State Competes at NCAA Regional

DETROIT, Mich. - The Cleveland State University fencing team had six individuals compete at the NCAA Midwest Regional Saturday inside Wayne State's Matthaei Center.

Sophomore Logan Shoemaker had the best performance by a Viking at the event. He placed sixth in the epee event after garnering five victories in the five-touch round-robin bouts.

Freshmen Vincenzo Trovato and Burton Hirschman were eighth and 11th, respectively, in the same event, as the former posted four wins on the day.

Senior Logan Eskew and freshman Aidan Gillespie both finished 11th with the former competing in the foil event and the latter participating in the saber event.

The only female competitor for the Vikings Saturday was senior Rachel Grabowski. She picked up one win on the day to finish 16th in the saber event.

Cleveland State had qualified 10 individuals for NCAA Regional action, but a few Vikings were unable to compete due to illness and injury.
