CLEVELAND, Ohio – Ten student-athletes from the Cleveland State University fencing team will continue their seasons this weekend by taking part in the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships.
The Midwest Regional is taking place this Saturday, March 11, inside Wayne State's Matthaei Center with competition slated to get underway at 9:00 a.m. Live stats for the event are available by clicking here.
The Midwest Regional will feature five-touch round-robin bouts in each weapon per gender.
CSU's total of 10 qualified individuals is one higher than it took to last year's event.
Three Vikings qualified in men's epee and two each in men's foil and men's saber. Freshman Burton Hirschman, sophomore Logan Shoemaker and freshman Vincenzo Trovato comprise the epee group. Senior Logan Eskew and sophomore Adam Mack qualified in the foil while junior Matthew Gebbett and freshman Aidan Gillespie qualified in the saber.
On the women's side, junior Sarah Mok qualified in the foil event while senior Rachel Grabowski and junior Jennifer Wisniewski qualified in the saber event.
Gebbett and Mok lead the way for the Vikings, as each posted a 64% winning mark in regional qualification matches.
The Vikings in attendance will be seeking to post a finish that will enable them to qualify for the NCAA Championships later this month. The Midwest Regional was awarded five allocation spots in women's epee and men's and women's foil and four allocation spots in men's epee and men's and women's saber. There are also two at-large allocation spots in each weapon class that are awarded on a national basis.
