CSU Combines For Four Wins While Facing Tough Foes

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Cleveland State University fencing team posted four wins while facing a number of nationally ranked opponents Sunday at the NU Duals inside the Castellan Family Fencing Center.

Northwestern hosted the event at Notre Dame since the Wildcats' fencing facility is undergoing renovations.

The CSU men posted a 3-3 dual record at the event while the Viking women were 1-6.

The CSU men began their day with a 20-7 victory over Incarnate Word before falling by the same margin to Air Force, a team receiving votes in the national polls. The Vikings then picked up back-to-back victories over Northwestern (17-10) and Caltech (16-11). Cleveland State ended its day with identical 23-4 setbacks to No. 5 Princeton and No. 9 Stanford.

The saber and epee contingents both contributed 24 victories on the day for the CSU men. Junior Matthew Gebbett led the squad by posting a 12-0 mark on the day in saber action. Sophomore Adam Mack led the men's foil group in wins while classmate Logan Shoemaker led the epee contingent.

Of the CSU women's six losses Sunday, three came to teams ranked in the top 10 and two more came at the hands of squads earning votes. The Viking women also had to forfeit six bouts in the epee category against each opponent.

The CSU women lost to No. 5 Penn State (0-27), University of California San Diego (9-18), Incarnate Word (12-15), Air Force (3-24), No. 9 Northwestern (4-23) and No. 2 Princeton (0-27). The Vikings ended their day on a positive note with a 19-6 victory over Caltech.

The foil side led the way for the women's side with 26 total victories. Junior Sarah Mok led the team with nine wins on the day.

Cleveland State will next contest the Midwestern Conference Championships. The two-day event will take place on the final weekend of Feburary and will be hosted by Ohio State.
