Viking Men Finish Unbeaten in Detroit

DETROIT, Mich. - The Cleveland State University men's fencing team continued its strong start to the season by finishing with a perfect 5-0 mark this past weekend at the Titan Invitational inside Calihan Hall.

The CSU men now own a 17-1 record in dual action this season.

The Viking women posted a 2-2 mark at the Titan Invitational and now stand at 9-8 on the season.

On the men's side, CSU began its day with a thrilling 14-13 victory over the host Titans. Cleveland State proceeded to then take down Denison (21-6), Michigan State (19-8) and Wayne State (17-10) before ending its day with a 15-11 win over Toledo.

The epee contingent led the way for the Viking men with 35 victories against 10 defeats. The foil group for CSU also had a strong day as it garnered 31 wins against 14 losses.

Sophomore Griffin Winterman and freshman Vincenzo Trovato led the epee group by both posting 11-3 records. Sophomore Adam Mack contributed a 9-3 mark to lead the foil trio while junior Matthew Gebbett went 10-2 in saber action to help the CSU cause.

The CSU women began their day with a comfortable 13-6 win over the host Titans. After a break, CSU suffered setbacks to Michigan State (9-18) and Wayne State (4-21). The Vikings ended their day strong with an 11-5 win over Toledo.

The foil group led the way for the CSU women by posting 18 wins on the day. Junior Sarah Mok led the foil contingent by picking up eight wins against two defeats on the day.

Senior Rachel Grabowski was the top women's saber scorer for CSU with seven wins on the day while classmate Simiola Babayode led the epee group with four victories.

Cleveland State will now return home for a full weekend of action. The Vikings will host the CSU Duals inside Woodling Gymnasium this Saturday, Jan. 21, at 9:00 a.m. Case Western, Detroit Mercy, McKendree, Michigan and Vassar will join the host Vikings Saturday.

CSU will then host the eighth annual John Szent-Kiraly Open Sunday, Jan. 22.
