Cleveland State Combines for 12-2 Mark at Case Western

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University fencing team posted 12 wins against just two losses as it competed in the Case Western Duals this past weekend.

The men's program notched a perfect 7-0 mark, often winning its matches with ease. CSU defeated Oakland (25-2), Oberlin (19-8), the host Spartans (20-7), Xavier (22-5), Denison (22-5), Bowling Green (24-3) and Michigan (15-14).

The epee contingent led the way for the Viking men as it contributed 54 victories against just nine defeats. The foil group picked up 49 wins against 11 defeats while the saber squad had 40 victories as opposed to 23 setbacks.

The women's program finished with a 5-2 record at the event as it won a couple of close matches and dropped a tight decision to the hosts of the event. The Viking women began the day with wins over Oakland (16-14) and Oberlin (14-8) before falling to the host Spartans (12-15). After a break, CSU then defeated Xavier (16-9), Denison (18-2) and Bowling Green (12-11) before ending the day with a loss to Michigan (2-25).

Similar to the men's side, the epee contingent on the women's side posted the best won-loss mark of the weapon groups as it had 33 victories against 22 defeats. The women's saber squad had 29 wins against 25 losses while the foil group was even with 27 of each variety.

Cleveland State will next be in action Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, when it competes at the Detroit Mercy Duals.
